Ingredients:

  • 1 hot dog bun
  • 5 ounces cooked ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons shredded cheddar
  • 1 tablespoon picante sauce
  • 1 tablespoon diced onion or tomato

Instructions:

  1. Warm a pan over medium heat and cook the ground beef, breaking it into small crumbles as it browns. Let it cook until fully done and no pink remains.
  2. Season the beef with taco-style spices such as cumin, coriander, chili powder, garlic powder, paprika, black pepper, and a small pinch of salt if available. Add a spoonful of picante sauce and a tiny splash of water if needed, then let it simmer for 1 to 2 minutes so the beef becomes juicy, saucy, and flavorful.
  3. Toast the hot dog bun lightly in a pan, toaster oven, or oven. This helps the bun hold the filling and gives it a warm, cozy texture.
  4. Spoon the seasoned beef into the toasted bun, tucking it in gently so it fills the center like a taco-style sloppy joe.
  5. Sprinkle cheddar over the warm beef. Warm the filled bun in a toaster oven, oven, microwave, or covered pan just until the cheese melts into the beef.
  6. Finish with picante sauce and diced onion or tomato for a little brightness and crunch.
  7. Serve warm, while the bun is soft, the beef is saucy, and the cheese is melted.

Chef’s note: This is casual, fun, and easy to eat, like a taco-style sloppy joe with melty cheddar tucked into a soft bun.

Optional: Add guacamole for creaminess, relish for a tangy twist, or extra tomato if you want it fresher and more summery.
